Chinatown Brasserie is 10 of NYC's Best Chinese Restaurants
380 Lafayette St., 212-533-7000, NoHo, Manhattan
Chinatown Brasserie has a richly detailed interior, ready to serve as a movie set for a Quentin Tarantino bloodbath. The savvy restaurateurs behind it are Josh Pickard and John McDonald of Lure Fishbar fame. Done in bold red and black, with tasseled silk lanterns and a koi pond, it's clubby but not too posh. The welcoming bar and lounge serves happy-hour cocktails and dim sum snacks. Keep it in mind for special-occasion dining or if you need something convenient to The Public Theater. Lamb dumplings, chicken-garlic rolls, steamed pork buns and vegetable spring rolls are excellent ways to start.
The day-and-night dim sum program also allows you to make a whole meal of tidbits. Bigger dishes include Cantonese-style lobster with string beans; sea bass with chili and black beans; and General Tso's chicken with ginger and scallions
