New York City Steak Hauses - The Palm Restaurant

New York City Steak Hauses - The Palm Restaurant

The Palm Restaurant
837 Second Ave., 212-687-2953, Midtown East, Manhattan
Housed in an old tenement building in the shadow of skyscrapers, the flagship Palm steak house has tenaciously staked out its territory since 1926. The tobacco-stained walls are a panorama of cartoon figures (Betty Boop, Popeye) and caricatures of customers (Jackie Gleason, J. Edgar Hoover, Telly Savalas) drawn by artists in exchange for free meals. Loyalists keep returning for the dry-aged New York strip and double-cut lamb chops, as well as for lusty sides of hash browns and the popular Half & Half (cottage fries and fried onions). Men tuck on bibs before attacking the colossal broiled lobster. Their wives seem just as happy with the Atlantic salmon and vibrant string beans. Not that you really want to know, but a calorie count is listed beside each menu item
