Splashy murals, a touch of samba and the scent of cachaça spilling over limes set the stage for feasting Carioca-style at this low-key grill. While all the Brazilian accents are here--including creamy bobó de camarão and a serviceable moqueca--it"s the beef that lures the crowd. The costela Bam Bam, prime rib with a mammoth-sized hunk of tender meat, is top choice among churrasco-deprived expats. Brazil's signature steak, the grilled picanha, (top sirloin) also makes a fine appearance, served with classic farofa (fried yucca flour) and vinaigrette. There"s a particularly nice buzz Thursday through Saturday, when voice and violão (guitar) add old-school bossa nova to the scene.

Whenever you see West Lake beef soup on a menu, order it. This Cantonese specialty is thick with tender morsels of steak, egg white, scallions, mushrooms and bright green cilantro leaves—basically an egg drop soup extraordinaire. At Imperial Palace, a giant bowl of it is enough for three or four people.

The red-carpeted dining room offers lots of big tables covered in white linen—but they could use more, as clusters of families are often waiting outside. Service is brisk and English minimally spoken. Dungeness crab with sticky rice, clams with black bean sauce, braised sablefish and lamb chops are also popular. Many swear it's the best Cantonese food in Flushing, if not all of the City.

Porteños are citizens of Buenos Aires, where old-school steak houses like this abound. The wood-paneled walls are crammed with guitars, bandonéons, gaucho gear and portraits of tango legend Carlos Gardel, yet it feels dignified, not kitschy. In 1991, Argentinean Pichi Leiva founded La Porteña, its authenticity aurally aided by tango music and a preponderance of native Spanish speakers. The menu is the genuine article, too, with flaky empanadas and a wide range of grilled steaks to be dressed up with a chimichurri sauce so delicious it's also sold by the jar. The mixed grill, with a helping of everything, is for truly dedicated carnivores. The Italian section of the menu (Buenos Aires was heavily settled by Italians) includes homemade cannelloni and chicken Milanese. Portions are enormous and the prices here are lower than at most other steak houses in the City
