new york city vegetarian restaurants Angelica Kitchen
Angelica Kitchen
300 E. 12th St., 212-228-2909, East Village, Manhattan
There's a cinnamon-hued glow to this godmother of the City's vegan restaurants, open since 1976. Wearing its age well, Angelica Kitchen enjoys a steady turnover of tables and a stream of loyalists at the takeout shop next door.
Some of the Asian-influenced dishes haven't changed since day one, such as the Dragon Bowl layered with rice, beans, tofu, sea vegetables and steamed vegetables; dressings include black sesame with wasabi and garlic, creamy carrot with ginger, and a puree of tahini, scallions and parsley. It's also still cash only and BYOB with no corkage fee. The daily specials keep things fresh and interesting: think items like udon noodles in shiitake broth, and banana trifle with peanut butter mousse, vanilla cake and mixed berry coulis.
