new york city vegetarian restaurants Dirt Candy

Dirt Candy
430 E. 9th St., 212-228-7732, East Village, Manhattan
East 9th Street vegetarians are blessed to have Dirt Candy and Kajitsu on the same block, both of them exceptional destinations. At Dirt Candy, the more informal of the two, Amanda Cohen is the star, an Iron Chef America competitor and visionary when it comes to vegetables. She and her saucy staff oversee the buzzing, 18-seat dining room appointed with white tables and bright orange banquettes. Reservations are a must.
Cohen, a vet of Pure Food and Wine and Teany, is constantly experimenting with new flavors and ingredients, documented in her lively, self-deprecating blog on Dirt Candy's website. You'll find fun items like jalapeƱo hush puppies with maple butter; mint and tarragon pasta with squash blossom relish, yogurt and saffron sauce; and, for dessert, popcorn pudding with salted caramel corn.
