Jones Wood Foundry
401 E. 76th St., 212-249-2700, Upper East Side, Manhattan
Who knew this part of the Upper East Side was called "Jones Wood" in the 19th century? Chef/co-owner Jason Hicks did his research on the farmland subdivision, along the way discovering that the building's address once housed a foundry that made cast-iron weather vanes, lampposts and manhole covers. Hence how Jones Wood Foundry, a food-driven pub, got its name. The classy, grown-up bar has British lads coming out of the woodwork, attracted by the fine selection of beer. For dinner, Anglophiles spread out in the back dining room, lined with custom-made, deep-buttoned Chesterfield banquettes. Hicks is from the Cotswolds and proud to showcase the best of British culinary traditions, from beer-battered haddock and chips to steak and kidney pie and sticky toffee pudding with treacle sauce.
