Lighthouse
145 Borinquen Place, 347-789-7742, Williamsburg, Brooklyn
A trio of vets from Employees Only, Macao Trading Co. and La Esquina have banded together to open Lighthouse, a windowed café at the base of a narrow building in Williamsburg that bears a striking resemblance to the Flatiron. From a distance, it truly looks like a beacon for navigation. Brother and sister Assaf and Naama Tamir and chef Nicholas Cox are the dedicated owners, hammering together the airy, simple space and a menu that focuses on big salads, a raw bar and lots of house-made pickled items, including pickled herring. The menu is still being tweaked, but you can reliably count on freshly shucked oysters, ceviche, grilled New Zealand lamb chops and excellent steak. The long cherrywood bar is a good place to pull up for a cocktail.
