This is the Jamaican jerk shack Anna Wintour didn't want you to see (the Vogue editor disliked the idea so much, she attended local community board meetings to express fear of noise and nightlife shenanigans). Well, here it is—with certain restrictions keeping it in check. There is no full liquor license—just beer, wine and soju. A cordial doorman will not admit anyone without a reservation—so if you don't have one, arrive no later than 6pm. Acoustic tile on the ceiling helps muffle the noise. The "Favourite Cakes" part of the name is misleading, although the restaurant offers cake and sweet corn fritters called "festivals." Serge Becker (Café Select, La Esquina) is a partner along with Paul Salmon of the cliff-hugging Rockhouse Hotel in Negril. The pastel-hued, casual front room has a red Formica bar and checkered linoleum floors; in back, it's more dark and private, with ska and reggae album covers coating the walls. Rockhouse's chef, Bradford Thompson, was recruited to implement a menu of Jamaica's greatest hits—jerk chicken, curry goat and oxtail stew. A juice bar and take-out shop is slated to open next door, barring protests.
