On a pedestal sits the prettiest lemon meringue cake you ever saw—one that belongs on a food-magazine cover. A glass case holds a dozen bins overflowing with a rainbow of gelato and sorbet, in flavors like bananimal (banana, cinnamon and crushed animal crackers) and coconut stracciatella. This pink-and-white café/bakery is an annex of neighbor Sorella, the popular Italian restaurant run by rising stars Emma Hearst and Sarah Krathen. Sorella's addictive house-made grissini (breadsticks) are for sale here, as are plump, fresh-baked muffins and sandwiches you'd never slap together yourself, like roasted turkey with tangy Podda cheese, shallot-bacon jam and arugula on crunchy buttermilk bread. Also look for thick milkshakes and molasses-spiced marshmallow cookies. You can eat-in at the small marble counter or call for a late-night gelato delivery if you're in the vicinity.
