David Burke Kitchen
23 Grand St., 212-201-9119, SoHo, Manhattan
David Burke, whose empire stretches from Las Vegas to Manhattan's Upper East Side, now has a stake in SoHo, at the new James hotel. He is the P.T. Barnum of chefs, presenting such curiosities as "ants on a log" (bone marrow with snails, parsley and garlic), "tomahawk" steak and "shanks a lot." His inventive American food is never pedestrian; even french fries get a twist here, cooked in smoked beef fat and laced with jalapeƱos. The bar is a good place to survey the scene of well-heeled patrons hobnobbing with Burke; you can also enjoy an expert cocktail and a fat hamburger. The subterranean, attractive dining room has a wood-planked ceiling that looks like an overturned boat. The nautical theme continues upstairs, where a rowboat is harbored on the large outdoor patio.
